Reduce stress with tai chi, Worcester County, MA

Tai chi (TIE-chee) originated in China for self-defense and has evolved into a form of exercise that's now used for stress reduction and to help with a variety of other health conditions. Tai chi is sometimes described as "meditation in motion" because it promotes serenity through gentle movements — connecting the mind and body. Because tai chi is low impact, it may be especially suitable if you're an older adult who otherwise may not exercise.

Tai chi, also called tai chi chuan, is a self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. To do tai chi, you perform a series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion.

Tai chi has many different styles. All forms of tai chi include rhythmic patterns of movement that are coordinated with breathing to help you achieve a sense of inner calm. The concentration required for tai chi forces you to live in the present moment, putting aside distressing thoughts.

During tai chi, you focus on movement and breathing. This combination creates a state of relaxation and calm. Stress, anxiety and tension should melt away as you focus on the present, and the effects may last well after you stop your tai chi session.

Despite its long history, tai chi has been studied scientifically only in recent years. Preliminary evidence suggests that tai chi may offer numerous benefits beyond stress reduction, including:

• Reducing anxiety and depression
• Improving balance, flexibility and muscle strength
• Reducing falls in older adults
• Improving sleep quality
• Lowering blood pressure
• Improving cardiovascular fitness in older adult
• Relieving chronic pain
• Increasing energy, endurance and agility
• Improving overall feelings of well-being

Personal Safety / EZ Defense Program

Program Description:

Level One: Non-Contact, Verbal Boundaries Skills and Concepts. In this program, you’ll learn how to assert yourself and deal with the natural excitement and fear that can cause you to “freeze-up” when faced with an aggressor. You’ll be lead through simple by effective drills and scenarios designed to help you overcome the uncomfortable feelings and fear that can mark you as an easy target for attack.

Understand how to use your emotions to help you become stronger and safer. Fear and anger are tremendous sources of power when used in defense.

The Level One program has no contact and is a perfect introductory program.

Features of the EZ Defense Program

EZ Defense builds on your personal strengths.

EZ Defense builds on the potential that you already have for self- protection. This includes the ability to learn to make good choices and use effective reasoning under stress. EZ Defense provides self-protection training in a safe, supportive environment.

The step-by-step process of developing skills and confidence builds from yhe successes you attain in every class. By the end of the course. You will have used your skills repeatedly to assess danger, set boundaries, and respond effectively to real and potential attacks.

With the support of other students and the instructor, you’ll have many opportunities to practice using your skills, judgments, and emotions in simulated attack scenarios. You Can Protect Yourself!

EZ Defense is highly specialized self-protection program that teaches you to successfully defend against an assailant of any size.

EZ Defense is based on the idea that learning is best accomplished by “doing.”
In all of our programs, you’ll work with a highly trained instructor who will create safe, yet powerful, scenarios and role plays designed to help you experience the “rush” of self-defense without contact and without the danger or consequences.

You Are Worthy of Defending
Learn simple and effective self-protection and prevention skills through the EZ Defense program. These are concepts that any person, regardless of age or fitness level, can learn.

Practice in a safe environment.
The instructor teaches and demonstrates all the skills and coaches students while they practice. The key to the EZ Defense program is that there is no contact. You will be amazed by the power and control you will develop as a result of learning and then practicing simple EZ Defense concepts under the safe supervision of our trained coach.

What Will I Learn?
EZ Defense has developed a wide variety of progressive learning programs ranging from non-contact, one day classes on verbal skills to intense multi-week programs.

Why is EZ Defense important for you?
Truly, the most important skill you will develop is the ability to stay in control. This is the critical skill that will help you avoid violence in over 90 percent of all potentially harmful situations.

What other benefits will I receive?
Many participants tell us that the benefits of EZ Defense training go far beyond learning self-defense. Our graduates report:

  1. • Increased focus and effectiveness at work
    • The ability to remain calm and use clearheaded thinking during stress or crisis
    • Feeling less intimidated by other people or situations
    • Increased self-esteem and assertiveness
    • Greater confidence
    • Improved leadership skills
    • Improved ability to communicate clearly and directly
    • Increased problem solving skills

Think about it.

What would your life be like if you were never intimidated by a person or situation again?

Have you decided what you’re doing for your child’s next birthday? Let us help. We have standard and custom party packages available for you to choose from. We will do everything from ordering and picking up the cake and pizza to setting up the space and cleaning up and beyond. Your child can invite up to 20 of their closest friends for an hour of energetic fun and learning basic Karate skills then sit down to cake and presents for another 30 minutes. When the party’s over, leave everything to us. No house to clean, no trash to remove…how much easier could it be? Call us for all the details and to reserve your party time.

Here is a comment about one of our recent karate birthday parties:

Hi Sensei,

We booked son's 8th birthday party with MJA Martial Arts, which was a great success.

The guests had a fabulous time, as did the birthday boy. We got several compliments from the parents of our guests, saying they thought the party was unique and fun. They especially liked the fact that the children were engaged in vigorous physical activity.

The highlight of the party for our son was breaking the board, he has it prominently displayed in his room as a keepsake. Having all his friends signatures on it makes it all the more special.
Lisa

Town of Spencer Halloween Party

I thought I would share a copy of the nice letter we received from the Town of Spencer Board of Selectmen with regards to our participation in the kids' Halloween party. There were over 300 children in attendance.

Seniors & Adults Qi Gong, Spencer, MA - Serving Worcester County

What is QI Gong ? (pronounced “chee gong”) Qi Gong has been practiced in China for thousands of years. It’s purpose is to develop Chi. The word “qi” (or “chi”) means “life force”; Qi Gong is specifically designed to cultivate this energy, using it to heal and strengthen every system throughout the body. Qi Gong's gentle, rhythmic exercises mirror the movements of nature, especially the fluidity of water. Combined with simple breathing techniques, Qi Gong is uniquely suited to relieving stress, boosting the immune, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and increasing the body’s innate healing abilities. It can enhance people who train in the martial arts, but it’s not necessary to be a martial artist to practice Qi Gong. All ages can benefit especially the Seniors. These exercises have shown marked results in patients suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritic rheumatism and various digestive diseases. It also strengthens the digestive system, which can help reduce weight. It's a great choice for anyone looking to increase overall wellness and find more energy and joy of life.

Are you getting enough sleep?

RealAge.com is an online source of health information. It provides a variety of tips on how to keep your “real age” as young as possible. Below are some recent tips offered by the website: Protect Yourself Against Night Colds According to a study cited by RealAge.com, one of the best protections against night colds is getting enough quality sleep. Says the site, “Getting a little less sleep – under 7 hours instead of 8 or more – made people three times more likely to get sick after exposure to a cold virus. ” In addition, it may be more important that the sleep you get is quality sleep than lengthy sleep. Again, according to the study, people “were five times more likely to get sick when their sleep quality dipped if it just dipped a smidge.”

Teaching your Child About the Importance of Perseverance

Steady persistence in a course of action, especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

Perseverance is an essential ingredient for success. It is our goal to help develop an attitude of perseverance in each student through their martial arts training. As you know, perseverance is an attitude that will impact their lives in a variety of ways.

Other Things Parents & Caregivers Can Do to Help Their Child Learn Perseverance

Don’t let them quit! As parents, it is often very tempting to give in to our children when they want to quit something that is difficult for them. Let’s face it, it’s a struggle to get them mentally and physically prepared for the activity, there is often whining from the child about having to go,
and there are other things you might be more interested in doing. However, acquiescing to their desire to quit sends the wrong message. Help them learn the value of perseverance by having them continue trying.

Encourage them. Words of encouragement from a parent are some of the most impactful aspects of a child’s life. Let them know you understand their challenges, want to help, and believe in their ability to overcome and succeed. Just knowing you care and believe in them can give them the motivation to persevere and succeed. Provide them examples of perseverance. Whether it
is personal examples, stories of relatives and friends that persevered, or stories about historical figures, your child will learn the value of perseverance through these examples. These examples will reinforce the lessons we teach them in their martial arts classes, and your own encouragement to them.

Helping your Child to Succeed in and out of the Dojo

Success is defined differently by each individual. It is based on their personal goals, their interests, their skills and abilities, and their values. But while we all may define “success” differently, there are some common elements that help determine if someone will achieve success.

Success requires dedication. A person must be committed to his or her goals to achieve success. In addition, success involves taking some risks. Not in the sense of “risky behavior,” but in the sense of stretching one’s abilities, knowledge, and skills. To be successful, we must also know what our talents and abilities are, and where they can best be used. Finally, successful people look at failure differently than others. They see it as just one more step towards their eventual accomplishment.

Discuss what success means to you with your child. Let them know why you define it as you do. And explain how that definition has impacted your life. No one will have greater impact on your child’s future success than you.

Other Things Parents & Caregivers Can Do to Help Their Child Succeed In and Out of the Dojo

Provide a healthy diet. We have all seen the horrendous statistics about the increase in child obesity over the last two decades. Good health starts with a healthy diet. Be sure to monitor the
amount of sugars and fats you child consumes. In addition, avoid fast food alternatives to healthy, home-cooked meals. Give them permission to make mistakes. No one is perfect. But often, whether it’s in school, on the court or field, in band, or in the dojo, our children often get the impression we expect perfection from them. Let them know it is ok to make mistakes.
Help them understand it is part of the learning process. Give them the freedom to be creative and to take positive risks – the kind that lead to personal growth. Provide them examples of people you consider successful. After you have discussed your definition of success, give your child examples of people you believe fit that definition. Explain how and why those people became successful. Let your child know that you believe they can be successful, too. Demonstrate interest and concern in your child’s activities.

Whether it is school, martial arts, music, or any other activity you child participates in, nothing will give them a boost towards success like knowing you care. Parental involvement is crucial to the future success of a child. No one will have more influence over your child’s success than you, take advantage of this opportunity to help your child be successful for his or her entire life!

Adult Wing Chun Classes, Spencer, MA

Wing Chun System (Wing Tsun) has been made popular by Bruce Lee, Alan Lamb and Randy Williams just to name a few. In the early part of the 20th Century there were practitioners like Grand Master Yip Man who taught Bruce Lee and many others. Grand Master Leung Ting has made an incredible impact with the Wing Chun System. Wing Chun is a system that is based on the centerline theory. It teaches the concepts of timing and reacting, economizing moves with maximizing the effectiveness of the counter attack. Although there are four Forms in the system, (Siu-Nim-Tau-Little Idea form, the Chum Kiu -Arm Seeking Form, the Biu-Tze-Thrusting Finger Form, and the Muk Yan Chong -Wooden Dummy Techniques Form.) Chi Sau (Sticky Hands) is what makes up the Wing Chun. Through intensive training using these principles the practitioner becomes more fluent, using soft to hard and back to soft again. Do not be fooled by all the forms and techniques that are in the system, Wing Chun is by far one of the deadliest combative Martial Arts practiced in the world today.

Wing Chun Gung Fu is a fascinating system of martial arts. It focuses on using natural reaction to defend oneself and striking with economy. Like our adult Kenpo class, this class is dedicated and designed specifically for adults.

Preparing for the Heat: Recognize the signs of heat-related health problems.

July is here and it’s hot, hot, hot! It’s important to prepare for the heat and recognize the signs of heat-related health problems. If ignored, they can become very painful, and quite serious. The most common heat-related condition is muscle cramps. These heat cramps are muscular spasms caused by a lack of water and salt. When you are exercising or working outside during the summer, your body loses these important elements. The result can be heat cramps.

The best protection against heat cramps is to keep your body hydrated. This means drinking lots of water while working or exercising outdoors. Also, limit the amount of time you exercise or work outdoors. This will reduce the amount of fluids your body loses, and help keep you cool. When the high temperatures hit, it is often a very good idea to take a couple of weeks and reduce your exercise schedule until your body is fully acclimated to the heat. Then you can gradually return to your normal routine.

Another heat-related condition is heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion, like heat cramps, results from a loss of fluids in the body. However, it is a much more serious condition, and can lead to heat stroke – a potentially fatal condition. It is important to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and to treat it immediately.

Signs of heat exhaustion include:
• Cool, moist, pale, flushed or red skin
• Increased sweating and tiredness
• Headaches
• Fainting, nausea, or vomiting
• Fast, shallow breath, dizziness
• Muscle cramps, weakness
• A weak, rapid pulse

To treat heat exhaustion, get the person to a cooler place and have them rest in a comfortable position. Give the person half a glass of water every 15 minutes. Avoid fluids with caffeine or alcohol in them. Loosen or remove tight fitting clothing and apply cool, wet cloths. Summer is a time of fun and adventure. But be prepared for the heat, and be alert to the signs of heat-related conditions. Protect yourself and your family while enjoying your summer.

Massachusetts Tactical Defense Training

Tactical Defense Training for Law Enforcement, Correctional officers, and Private Security Firms

In the average career of a law enforcement agent, there will be dozens of resist arrest situations. These encounters don’t always justify deadly force, but the suspect still needs to be put down and controlled.

Spending time shooting at the gun range is fun, but simply having a firearm will not provide all the self-defense protection a person will need. A gun is a tool that can be used in self-defense, not self-defense itself.

The most important weapons you have are your own mind and body. It’s important that anyone who is employed in law enforcement, or has a job that puts them in life-threatening situations, learn the best techniques and procedures to end violent confrontations quickly. While defense tactics training is tiring and often painful, it will better your odds that your family will see you after every shift.

Our tactical defense training techniques and procedures are directed towards the safety of those employed in law enforcement and provide the necessary "tools" which can be used in life-threatening situations.

This program provides in-depth study and practice so that your defense tactics become natural and effective. The topics outlined below will provide an officer with the important skills needed to survive as a street officer.

Call us for a free consultation to set up a program in your law enforcement agency.

Karate Classes for Children, Spencer, MA - Serving Worcester County, MA

The Ninja Tiger Cubs Program is a detailed curriculum that focuses on improving the pre-school age child's basic motor and listening skills. These skills will help them enter society with a more confident and enthusiastic outlook. They will become better students, better listeners at home, and more ambitious towards the future.

We believe the time between the ages of 3 and 5 are the most important years of a child's development. Our program will enhance positive developments in a fun and motivating way and introduce your child to basic Kenpo karate skills.

Each student is treated as an individual and advances at his/her own pace. They are not expected to "keep up" with anyone else. The Ninja Tiger Cubs Program is broken up into eight themes:

Focus - This skill will help your child's aim, listening skills and reaction skills. They will excel faster in any physical activities. Your child will also become a better listener and more focused student in school.

Teamwork - Teamwork is necessary for any young child to develop. The more your child is willing to work with others, the more he or she will accomplish. Your child will develop character which will help him or her make new friends and become a better leader in life.

Control - Having control means making good decisions. Whether your child is handling a pet or handling a problem, he or she will learn to make the right decisions. Control builds confidence.

Balance - This skill is crucial to develop at an early age. Your child is beginning to participate in many physical activities that are challenging, like riding a two-wheel bicycle. Your child will develop good balance and better posture.

Memory - Developing a good memory is crucial for your child. Our drills are constantly helping your child think and make smart decisions.

Discipline - Our instructors use the Little Ninja drills to help create the vision that discipline is fun and rewarding. Your child will take pride in doing the right thing. Your child will also follow directions better.

Fitness - It is important for children to understand the importance of being healthy and physically fit. If your child does not burn off excess energy constructively how will he or she focus?

Coordination - Your child will learn left from right. They will become better physical participants in sports and other activities. The better coordination your child has the fewer injuries he or she will sustain.
