It’s More Than a Belt. Local Teen Chooses the Path of a Martial Artist.

After many years of dedication and hard work, Michael Frustaci of Worcester, MA received his First Degree Black Belt in American Kenpo Karate from Sensei Mike Agbay of MJA Martial Arts, Inc. on Saturday.

Surrounded by family, friends and fellow martial arts students, Frustaci was honored for his hard earned achievement.   Frustaci began training with Agbay at the age of ten.  The “Rabbit,” as he is affectionately called by members of the MJA staff, continues to be a source of positive energy at the school and serves as a role model for others.

As the first member of the MJA Leadership Team, Frustaci set the standard for what it means to be a martial artist.  After leadership training, Frustaci was promoted to the role of instructor.  In a recent class Frustaci explained to the younger students what it takes to earn a black belt.

“I wouldn’t have gotten this far without perseverance, commitment, dedication and intense training, Frustaci said.  “It takes a lot of hard work and practice to learn martial arts.”

Frustaci, a senior at St. Peter Marian High School, spent a full week testing for his black belt while his friends were enjoying April vacation.

“The black belt test is not easy,” said Agbay. “Michael had to demonstrate his knowledge of skeletal and muscular anatomy and the concepts of the system.  In addition to performing self-defense techniques and forms, he faced several physical challenges including a 3.5 mile run.”

Belt rank promotions were awarded to several students at the belt ceremony held at MJA Martial Arts in Spencer, Mass.  In a special presentation, Frustaci was recognized for his recent black belt achievement.

“You have overcome many obstacles in your life,” said Agbay.    “No matter how difficult things became, you persevered and those obstacles served as life lessons.”  “You have chosen the path of a martial artist,” said Agbay proudly.

In keeping with tradition, a Katana (a Japanese sword used mainly by the Samurai) was presented to Frustaci.

“This sword represents the longstanding relationship between the sensei and the student when the student achieves their Black Belt and possesses the skills needed to use the sword in training and in life,” said Agbay.

Frustaci graduates with his class at St. Peter Marian at the end of this month and looks forward to continuing his martial arts training.

 “My training has just begun,” said Frustaci with a smile.

Leicester Mothers' Club Members Participate in Self-Defense Training at MJA Martial Arts

The instructors at MJA Martial Arts had the pleasure providing members of the Leicester Mothers' Club of Leicester, Mass. with an introductory course to self-defense.

The Leicester Mothers’ Club has been in service to the community since 1945 providing enrichment activities and programs to the students of Leicester, Mass. Members of the club participated in an evening of Self-Defense training on April 3, 2012 held at the Leicester High School.

We covered awareness & observation techniques, boundary settings, verbal defense, vital points of contact to ward off an attacker, and confidence building techniques for stressful situations. We also practiced some of the techniques taught and all did very well. We have some Ninjas in training, I think!

Here is what one member had to say about the class, "What a great night! First off... a very special thank you to MJA Martial Arts for demonstrating a fantastic Self-Defense overview last night to our members. Hopefully we are all more aware of our surroundings and better ways to protect ourselves!"

Thank you to the members of the Leicester Mothers' Club for allowing us to introduce you to self-defense techniques that will help ensure your safety.

American Heart Association Fundraiser, Help Prevent Cardiac Events in Women!

MJA Martial Arts, Inc will be participating in the American Heart Association’s fundraiser Go Red for Women.  February 3, 2012 is “National Wear Red Day” on which you can inspire friends, family, and co-workers to wear red and speak up about heart disease.

According to the AHA website:  "More women die of cardiovascular disease than from the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. But 80% of cardiac events in women could be prevented if women made the right choices for their hearts involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking."

Common heart attack symptoms include:
  • Uncomfortablepressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back;
  • Pain ordiscomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach;
  • Shortness ofbreath along with, or before, chest discomfort;
  • Other signs suchas breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness
Please help us by buying a sticker for $1.00 or a red dress pin for $5.00 (both of them have useful, shareable information on the back) or by making a tax deductible donation to American Heart Association and dropping it off at the school.

Join MJA to support the mission that could save the life of your mother, sister, cousin, wife, or best friend. Let’s raise the funds needed to fight the No. 1 killer of women that takes more lives each year than all cancers combined.

Please share this with your family and friends.

Thanks.
